Stretch Your Science Teaching into Math and Writing

Hi, Teaching Friends!

When time constraints squeeze something out of the daily schedule in our primary grade classrooms,
it's usually science or social studies. Sad, because we know how important they both are and also how much many of our students love them. But the reality is that literacy and math are paramount and we all know it.

So, what's a teacher to do? Well, one idea that I'm sure we all try to do is to choose our readalouds with an eye to the content area topics we're teaching.  Solid readalouds boost your students' exposure to content area vocabulary, and they also address literacy standards for non-fiction. A great book can also be the springboard for some non-fiction writing, either whole class or in a writing center.

I recently posted this resource that will also help you put more science back into your day. This set includes 44 writing and data collection activities aligned with the eight favorite first grade topics you see listed on the cover image. This set will save you time, since you'll be addressing writing and math standards using your science content. It will also improve content area vocabulary mastery, since your little learners will use the words again and again. You can take a closer look at what's in this resource (and get three free samples in the preview!) by clicking on the image.
