PLEASE Take Time to Read This!

Dear Friends,

Many thanks to those of you who left a comment yesterday - your free copies of "I Have, Who Has: Mentally Adding 10" have been sent out to you!

Today, I'd like to share a link with you that was shared with me by a dear friend with whom I taught.

Dr. Kylene Beers, a Heinemann author and former president of NCTE, wrote a post with the title "Why I Hated Meredith's First Grade Teacher: An Open Letter to America's Teachers".  I would imagine that a beautifully written piece like this may already be spreading like wildfire so it's possible that you've already heard about it, but I don't want you to miss it.

Friends, don't let the title of the essay put you off.  This is an amazing tribute to the effect a teacher can have on the life of a child. It has also opened up the hearts of teachers and parents who share their experiences and emotions in dozens of comments.

This would be a great encouragement for any teacher to read as a new school begins, and also to save and read again at those moments  during the year (you know the ones I mean) when the filter of exhaustion or discouragement can turn you off course or cause you to question why you teach.

Please click on the picture to connect with Dr. Beer's essay. Then spend a bit more time enjoying the comments, too. If you choose to leave a comment, I'd love it if you'd copy it here, too, to share with our readers.

Thanks for taking time to read this post.

  3. I have to admit that I was put off by the title when I discovered it a few days ago. But then curiosity got the best of me and I was so glad that I read it. As a teacher who doesn't have kids of her own yet, it really made an impression on me.

    1. I felt the same way about the title at first, Sara. Sure glad that it wasn't another teacher bash!
Many wonderful teachers have no children of their own, but I know that having our 2 daughters definitely had a huge influence on me as a teacher.
